Dr. Michael Mel is from the Mogei tribe of the Wila Village, Mt. Hagen, Western Highlands Province, PNG. His work as a performance artist, writer, and curator focuses on the contemporary art of PNG, issues of cultural identity and survival, and education through art. He received his PhD from Flinders University of South Australia and is presently the pro vice chancellor of the University of Goroka. He has published extensively and in 2006 he was named the Prince Claus Award Laureate. He is also co-curator of Hailans to Ailans. Join Dr. Mel for this lecture, then see him the following night in performance with an original piece entitled Kam long mi- Opim ai na iau (Come to me – Open your eyes and ears).
