Meet Purago Marabe and Martin Morububuna

Meet and watch two of Papua New Guinea’s preeminent artists as they work in the Kimball Education Gallery at San Francisco’s de Young Museum (50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive, Golden Gate Park).
From October 7 to November 1, 2009, Purago Marabe and Martin Morububuna will be working in the museum’s Kimball Education Gallery Wednesday through Sunday, 1:00–5:00 p.m., and Friday, 1:00–8:45 p.m. Their visit is made possible through the Jolika Fellows program, which celebrates the Jolika Collection of New Guinea Art, located in the Marcia and John Friede Gallery.

Purago Marabe is a self-taught artist and poet from the Okapa district of the Eastern Highlands Province, PNG. He promotes sustainable development and collects seeds, stories, and songs. His current project is to reforest his own residential lands with a jungle of trees. Marabe’s community arts involvement includes developing adult literacy programs with the Goroka YWCA and participating as a poet in the Women’s Writer’s Workshop at the University of PNG. He is a lecturer and published poet, most recently in Lost in the Jungleways: A Collection of Stories and Poems by Young Writers from Papua New Guinea.
