Simpson, we're still working on the video for the performance I mentioned above (the one currently available is from the de Young Museum a couple of years ago). When the new video's posted, it'll be announced on our home page. If you or someone else here would like an email notification when it's ready, send a note to that effect to info@hailanstoailans.com.

I totally agree with all the comments. If you are talking about promoting PNG culture then promote it genuinely - authentic bilas and all --not a mixture of things from all over PNG, Dr. Mel. Your own Mogei culture is unique - promote that - not bits of Tokles to excite everyone there - the outsiders. that you hail from such and such a culture. Be true to yourself and your people. But in trying to PNG on the world map, we thank you. Yeah, and the laplap with all that you have on is giaman, i no turu turu bilas bilong mipela. Thank you. Kenndy

Dan, Yes, the video was well done, I viewed it with others who were interest.

My first impression was that it seemed as though not much thought had gone into the organization of the concepts and issues that he tried to bring to light.

As an Expressive Arts expert, I would have though that Asso Professor Michael Mel would have translated his performance into a more succinct display of the issues
However, it is the arts and his interpretation was his take I guess
As a Papua New Guinean , I kind of felt that some of the issues that he eluded to were not given any justice.

Thank you, Dan for all the work that you are puting in to this Hailans to Ailan tour/project together? Simpson Sake.

Sorry, and thank you for your detailed reveiw on Dr. Mel's performance. No doubt it would have raised a lot of challenging questions there and certainy here in PNG. The bottom line is PNG has yet to see Dr.Mel perform here in PNG let alone the University of Goroka. Congratulations to him for managing the whole Hailans to Ailans himself at UOG! I hear that Expressive Arts Department has nothing to do with it. His own fellow artists and performers here stand to learn alot from him but so far it has been rather disappointing. We would like to see him perform here and then we won't be asking those sort of questions I am asking becuase I really don't know how he is presenting our cultures and arts abroad. I definitely have my reservations. These are the questions us PNGs are raising when we view pictures of those nature. Thank you. Daniel I Tope.

Sorry that it's hard to glean much about Michael's performance from the photos. We're working on the video of his Victoria performance (the same piece he performed in London), and will post that as soon as it's ready.

This performance raised many challenging questions about racism, nationalism, the recovery of indigenous identity and pride, and reconciliation. I found the laplap Michael wore to be a potent symbol of disenfranchisement, even as it seemed to celebrate national identity (the commercial design included national and provincial flags; it was like something one might buy in an airport gift shop).

Near the beginning of the performance, projections behind Michael included beautiful and colourful photos of Highlanders wearing traditional bilas. Then European ships arrived, and soon afterwards, a black and white photo showed plantation workers lined up for inspection, all clad in laplap uniforms. During this transition, Michael's character went from confidently narrating in his native language to dejectedly singing patriotic songs in English. At one point, his feathered headdress was removed by a missionary. Later, he recovered himself and engaged his former oppressors on his own terms- generous terms, in which each had most to gain by listening and learning from the other, acknowledging their shared past and working together for a better future.

Asso. Prof. Mel,
It is rather odd to see you in laplap - a "bridge" and promoter of PNG art and culture abroad clad in laplap. RaunRaun Theatre or other cultural groups that have traveled and performed overseas have presented us in real cultural bilas (gear) do it better. Do it the genuine Melpa way --your own identity and make us real proud. Daniel.

Quite impressive --bilums, bilums galore!!! Well done. I really appreciate the varied and intricate designs/creations of the bilum makers. How is laplap part of our PNG culture? Congratulations to the organisers and performers! Promoting genuine PNG art and traditions abroad is great. We would love to see in aired in PNG on EMTV or Kundu. I think you owe it to yourselves, your own societies and PNG. Well done, Guys! Thank you.
